The first Grateful Dead album released by Arista Records, Terrapin Station is considered one of the most intricate and ambitious albums in the band's entire discography. Arista's president, Clive Davis, had promised to get the band a hit record, so he brought in Fleetwood Mac producer Keith Olsen to work with them. The result was a departure from anything the band had done before, incorporating new sounds like strings, horns, and a choir. Side 1 of the album features songs like "Estimated Prophet," "Samson and Delilah," "Passenger," "Dancing In The Street," and "Sunrise," which marks Donna Jean Godchaux's first lead vocal on a Dead album. Side 2 is entirely devoted to the Terrapin Station suite, which is considered one of the most thrilling musical sequences ever produced by the Grateful Dead.
