Jack Tatum's 5th album as Wild Nothing, Hold, was written in pandemic-driven solitude of parenthood. Existing tasteful synth-pop evolved into fiery sonic maximalism with contribution from Elbrecht, Davidson, and Pilbeam. Lead single "Headlights On" has an acid house-like groove and beat indicative of Tatum’s new heights. With engineer Adrian Olsen, the resulting record is a celebration of isolation, collaboration and suburban desperation. "Suburban Solutions" offers an alluring anti-jingle and resistance to pop culture's child-choirs and Martika's "Toy Soldiers." Lyrically, Hold reveals uncertainty and fear, but carries a light-heartedness inspiring the listener to remain positive. Fusing Tatum's wife and Molly Burch's vocals, the end evokes a message of hope for his son's future.
